  1. William Faulkner’s short story, “A Rose for Emily” was really weird for me starting with the fact that the main character, Miss Emily Grierson, was a necrophiliac. Or that she clung to dead bodies and was unable to accept that her loved ones had passed away. With her father, although he took most of her life away, she clung to him mostly because that was all she knew. He was all she grew up with and he controlled most of her life. The same thing was with Homer, even though she killed him. I think she killed him to keep him close to her, maybe so that she would never have to let go or risk him leaving her. Because her father and pushed all of the other guys away and her one boyfriend left her, I think she was afraid of Homer leaving, therefore killing him. After his death, she hid him away in the top floor of her house and slept beside him as if he was still alive. The people who discovered this at the end of the story said that Homer looked like he had been positioned in an embrace so maybe Emily “cuddled” with the dead body until there was no longer flesh and she locked the upstairs. But then again, they found the “the strand of iron-gray hair” which meant she had slept there recently or within the past couple years because her hair had just turned that shade of gray. I think her biggest worries were abandonment and change. She was very apprehensive about all change around her. She wouldn’t allow the mailbox or numbers to be nailed to her house and she didn’t like that the newer generations were trying to change the town to be more modern with sidewalks and the fact that she would have to pay taxes even though she was told otherwise, a long time before. I think she’s too afraid to go out and communicate with others because her father controlled much of her life before and she either doesn’t know how to communicate anymore, is afraid of communication, or is afraid of gaining a friend and losing them. That points to why she likes dead people because they obviously aren’t able to physically leave her. I think the main ideas for Emily was that she was afraid of abandonment and afraid of changing her tradition because she was described as “a fallen monument” when she passed away, for hanging on to the traditional ways of the past.

  2. The short story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner is about accepting death. This whole story is set up similar to a horror movie. I pictured Emily’s house as this big, old, gray house with dead bushes and dead flowers around it and a dead tree in the front of it. It’s not a very welcoming house, and I get the vibe Emily isn’t a very welcoming person. I pictured her as a quiet girl with this blank expression on her face; dead eyes and no smile. She kept Homer in her house after he died and she laid next to him in their bed on the fourth floor of the house… and she laid next to him. Emily obviously could not accept Homer’s death. This clearly shows Emily has some mental issue. She’s always in the house and looking out the window, not paying her taxes, not associating with any of the townspeople, and buying arsenic. She denies her father is dead at the funeral so this is showing the reader Emily is in denial and does not accept death. She also keeps Homer’s body in her bed and lays next to him for years also showing she does not accept death. In the beginning the narrator also notes that the entire town attended Emily’s funeral in her house. Since Emily was completely insane no one has been in the house for about ten years. So the townspeople are nosy and want to see why Emily is so stubborn to leave the house. I’m sure they were expecting to find Homer’s deceased body and evidence Emily was laying with it!

  3. In the story, “A Rose for Emily,” Death hangs over Emily. Emily attempts to exert power over death by denying the fact of death itself. Her freaky relationship to the dead bodies of the men she has loved which makes her have necrophilia, is revealed first when her father dies. Emily’s disturbing attempt to fuse life and death ends up being her downfall and, death triumphs in this battle. The fact that Emily is an outsider may be the reason she looses her edge when the people around her die. No one wants to be alone. She is secluded from the town so when the few people she is close to die or going to leave so she does kill them, she’s going to want to have some way of coping. In her case it’s not letting go of these people. She has a loose notch or something causing her to be unsocial. When you’re not around people, people loose sanity. We have seen this in every scary movie. This story reminded me of something you see on NCIS because it’s so bizarre in the fact she just kept her boyfriend’s dead body and laid with it !! How disgusting. This story made me think that maybe the reason people loose their sanity and common sense is because their an outsider or just simply need a friend.

  4. “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner focuses mostly on death. I was very confused as the story started off, mainly because it talks about how old-fashioned Miss Emily is and how even though everything around her changes, she likes to live in the past. For example, Colonel Sartoris allows her to not pay taxes because of her father’s recent passing. He helped the community out by donating a large sum of money. Years later, after Colonel Sartoris dies, she defends her right towards the new mayor, stating that she didn’t have to pay taxes back when the Colonel was the mayor. Then, it talks about how her house has a terrible odor to it and this threw me off for a while. Once I read it again, I realized that it smelled so terribly because after her father died, she kept his body in the house for a few days, keeping the smell inside her house. She also denies that he was ever dead and is forced to give up the body so they can bury it. Also, she meets a young man named Homer Barron, who she immediately takes a liking to. She eventually starts to buy things that imply that she will be marrying Homer in the near future. Finally one day, he goes into the house and is said to “never be seen again”. This kind of creeped me out because whoever hears of that? Someone goes into a house and never comes out? Anyways, she eventually dies and people start to go through her house to see what it was like in that. They go upstairs, which was blocked off, into her room. They find that the room was preserved from the day that she was planning on marrying Homer. They also find Homer in the room!! This opened my eyes to what this story was about. She liked living in the past because she wants to feel like she will never grow old and die like everyone else. That’s why she kept the bodies in her home, keeps the house the same it was forty years ago, and doesn’t like to pay taxes. It takes her back to a time where she was younger and didn’t have to worry about dieing. But eventually, death overcomes her dream of eternal life on earth.

  5. The short story “ A Rose for Emily” is a sad story about a woman who does not leave her house after the death of her father. Emily is described as a woman who is obese with small skeleton, as if she's drowning in her body. I believe this represents how even though she is still alive, she is really dead in her own body as she stays secluded in her house for years and years. I think that if I were to ever stay in my house for even 2 days without be sick, I would go insane. I therefore think that she must of had to go insane, since she had not left her house in years and that is just not healthy for any human being. She also probably became obese and aged quickly because she was not getting any activity what so ever of what was known and no human contact other then the negro that did all of her outside of the house duties. At the end of the story, when the people break down the door into the room that has not been seen by anyone else in over forty years was a very strange and scary moment. It was the body of the man she once was with and everyone thought she was married too. She had purchased a couple items for him and in that room he was found with the items in bed, dead. A very symbolic piece was found which was a gray strand of hair which was obviously Emily's and the pillow had been used. The strand of hair represents love lost and just how much she held on to this man. I thought that this moment was very creepy and the fact that she was sleeping with this dead body was just disturbing. I think that this very moment at the end of the story can actually explain her weird behavior throughout the story and why she never left her house.

  6. The short story "A Rose for Emily" written by William Faulkner, is a weird and creepy story about a woman named Emily. In this story Emily loves her father very dearly, because he's the only man she lets her love. He never lets her go or do anything without him, and because of this Emily doesn't have a significant other. Eventually though he father passes away, and Emily doesn't believe that it's true. Even though he passed on. Emily still secludes herself from society and other people. One day though Emily finally meets a man named Homer Barron, Homer is a good man who many people seem to appreciate, Homer meets Emily and soon they begin to see each other. One day though the towns people that Barron has vanished, and there seems to be no trace of him. Emily continues her life as before, and no one in the town sees her again until she also passes away. At her funeral, which takes place in her house, the townspeople become very suspicious of her life, they begin to search the household when they come upon something completely unexpected. The people the dead body of Homer Barron..... Next to him though the notice a long piece of grey hair, the same hair color that Emily had. I believe that Emily killed Homer, as she didn't want to be without someone in her life, she refused to believe that her father was gone, so I feel as if this was a sick way of Emily always being able to have someone by her side. I also know for fact that she killed as she had purchased arsenic a few scenes before he vanished. This was a extremely creepy story but I guess it sets me up for perfectly for going into halloween weekend.

  7. This story started off normal enough, mentioning the funeral of a woman who had lived in the same house for most, if not all, of her life. People went to this funeral, if for no other reason, to just see the inside of the house, the front door of which had not been opened in at least a decade. Emily's father never let her have a boyfriend, so she never had the chance to find and hold onto love, which may be the cause for what we find at the end of the story. Because of this, she wants to hold on to whatever man she can, whether he is alive or not, just to have someone that she can be with forever. When her father dies, she spends three days telling people he is still alive and not allowing them to take his body from her house. After the body is taken though, she is left all alone with no one to be with. Until she meets Homer Barron, that is. The two of them get very close and spend a lot of time together, so much that people say they are going to get married. This, of course, never happens. However, they do spend the rest of their respective lives together. Miss Emily goes to the drugstore one day to buy poison, arsenic to be exact. Based on the following events in the story and the ending, it can be assumed, practically guaranteed, that she uses the arsenic to kill Homer so that she can have him with her for the rest of her life, and she spends every night sleeping next to his decomposing corpse in bed. Overall, the story has a very creepy ending, but is a very good story to read around Halloween.

  8. “A Rose for Emily” written by William Faulkner was about a woman who becomes isolated from the outside world. Emily started to stay inside and avoided going outside when her father died. She couldn’t recognize that her father had died and continued to mention that he was not dead. I think her father’s death was a very difficult time in her life because he was all she had. But the story mentioned how Emily and her father thought to highly of themselves. Her father would cause the young men in Emily’s life to leave. She didn’t have the chance to get close to the men or form emotional bonds with them. However, after her father’s death she met a construction worker, Homer Barron. She was able to become close to this man because her father wasn’t alive to destroy the relationship. But the part of the story when Homer came into her life started to confuse me. I didn’t understand why they both stayed in the house so much, until I realized that he was dead. Although, when Emily brought the arsenic I knew that she was either going to kill herself or Homer. She didn’t care about the type of arsenic because she just wanted anything that would fulfill her plans. But the end of the story was similar to murder shows. Homer’s body was found in the bed where Emily laid next to his body. This resembles people that want to hold on to their loved ones and avoid the feeling of being abandoned.

  9. The short story "A Rose for Emily" was a very creepy but entertaining story about a girl named Emily and her weird life story. Emily has a really over protective father that pushes away all the men in Emily's life. So because of this her father was the most important man in her life. When he died she was devastated. She refused to believe that he died for three days, telling people that he is still alive and refusing to let them take the body. After she finally realizes that he is gone she becomes very lonely until he met a man of lower class named Homer. They became very close and spent a lot of time together. In the story she bought arsenic and the only conclusion I could come to as she was going to kill herself or kill Homer. Towards the end of the store Homer disappears and Rose never leaves her house for many years. When he disappeared I thought that she killed him but it didn't reveal that until the end of the story when they went in her house after he died. He was laying dead in a room in her house. I believe Rose killed him because she has abandonment issues and she never wanted to be alone again. I believe this is because of the father. This is a great story for this time of the year and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  10. I thought that the story “A Rose For Emily” was very sad. It focused a lot on death and what this woman had to go through in her life. After her father passed away the townspeople began to see less and less of her and eventually stopped seeing her altogether after the passing of her boyfriend. The story talks about how after her father dies she keeps his dead body in her house for a few days. I thought this was sorta creepy but also might mean that she had a special emotional attachment to her father and after his passing something inside of her snapped. She refused to believe that he was gone. Once she meets Homer I think that she forms a sort of unhealthy attachment to him. This might be because she's trying to use him as a replacement to her father and that maybe she wants to feel the same love from Homer as she once did from her father which is why she wants to get married so bad. She is said to be extremely obese and eventually dies and the people in the town are very curious of what her house is like so they attend the funeral. They find a preserved room with Homer dead in it. She slept with his dead body every night. I think this story shows that Emily had an attachment issue and that she was never able to let go of the past.

  11. The short story “A Rose for Emily,” would have to be one of the weirdest but interesting stories I've read this semester. The mood for the story in general was quite sad and depressing. It is divided in five sections and not narrated in chronological order. In the beginning it immediately begins with the announcement of the death of Miss Emily Gierson but soon speaks of her life and past. She was part of a wealthy family and upper class so she held a pretty hefty traditonal title in the town. Her father was the type of man that did not want any guy assossiating themselves with his daughter, so she grew up to be really close and attached to him. When he died, she was distraught and did not want to face reality and give up the body to the bureau, which took three days. This brought up a lot of worry, pity and suspicion from the town towards Emily. She soon was on everyones radar because she she begn distancing herself so much and dissapearing. Emily had problems for sure, she was very lonely and probably felt like life was not the same. She soon was spotted “dating” this less wealthier man Homer, which the people of the town highly disapproved of considering he did not fit her 'type' nor family legacy. However, everyone knew something was odd when later in time Homer disappeared. Yet no one but the minister and servant had been insided the house. Years later when Emily dies, the towns people after her funeral enter the home, breaking into a sealed room upstairs which contained wedding materials and on the bed Homer's body itself. And right next to him a piece of her hair. That part was the shocker for me. Whether she used the poison(as mentioned) to kill Homer or not, she slept with a dead body! That's pretty sick. I believe she definitely had reached the highest point of loneliness and mental disorder anyone could possibly reach.

  12. The short story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner was a peculiar but interesting read. The fact that Emily never came out of her house seemed very strange but what was really disturbing was when they found Homer’s body in her house. The smell mentioned was then explained as well as her never leaving the house since we knew what she had done. Finding Home’s body with strands of Emily’s grey hair was a very ugly scene because it suggested that Emily lay with him even after she killed him which is disgusting. I couldn't understand how she could kill a man and be okay with it, but to lay with him after his death was truly unbelievable. Tobe really seems to have a sense of loyalty to him because he never left Emily’s side; even after she killed Homer and stored his body in the upstairs. Also, the sense of burden that Emily created for the town was very much noticeable throughout the story until she dies, but Tobe never really gives off the impression that Emily is a burden to him, or any impression for that matter.

  13. I found the short story, "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner was creepy but interesting read. I found it weird that the story started off mentioning the death of Emily. Emily was very close with her father and when he died Emily took three days before turning over his body to the town. Her father did not let her marry or have any boyfriends. I think she kept his body because she was scared to let go of the only emotional attachment she had in her life. After his death, Emily barely leaves her house and becomes very reclusive. Due to this, the women in the town feel pity for her. When work is being done in front of her house, Emily meets Homer Barron. Emily continues to spend time with Homer and the women continue to pity her because she is hanging out with a man with a lower status than her. At first, I think this is a good thing for Emily because she has not had an emotional connection she her father died. Emily buys some poison and uses it to kill Homer. She continues not to leave her house. She keeps Homer in the bedroom and lies with him. I found that very creepy. I think that she did this because she felt that was the only way to have a true and unfaltering connection with someone. Homer’s body is only found after Emily’s death. She sealed the room that he was in and they has to break it down in order to enter. When they did everything was the flashback to the past. This story was very disturbing.

  14. The story starts off by telling us the death of Miss Grierson. The whole story tells us the past events of her life . this story is kind of like a horror story. This story in a nutshell tells us how miss Grierson and how curious people were to see how her house looked because they haven’t been in there for a long time. At the same time they have some sense of respect for her because she came from a well-respected family in the town. The first part of the story talks about the relationship she has with her town. The town basically tells the whole story. We don’t get to hear none from her or how she felt. We see she seem to be a burden to her town. At some point she refuses to pay taxes. she kind of live in her own version of reality. In the story we come to find out that she meets her sweetheart, the whole town is happy for her. She makes this trip to the drugstore to purchase poison. Everybody thinks she was going to kill herself because the guy she found was a scam. She eventually poisons him instead. she then lays the deceased in her bed . They found hair and indentation on her pillow that explains she might have had intimacy with the deceased. She was a symbol of the old south, that she couldn’t change so she had to die so the town could move on.
